Sports and Games: Why they are the same, and Every activity can be a “Spame” June 5, 2006

sport (spôrt, spōrt) pronunciation
n.

    1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
    2. A particular form of this activity.
  1. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
  2. An active pastime; recreation.

game1 (gām) pronunciation
n.

  1. An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games.
    1. A competitive activity or sport in which players contend with each other according to a set of rules: the game of basketball; the game of gin rummy.
    2. A single instance of such an activity: We lost the first game.
    3. games An organized athletic program or contest: track-and-field games; took part in the winter games.
    4. A period of competition or challenge: It was too late in the game to change the schedule of the project.

Some would argue all sports are games, but not vice versa. I would contend that Any activity can be considered both a sport AND a game. This is because, during periods of thought and debate on the matter, I have been unable to distinguish between the two. Also, no one has been able to give me a satisfactory definition to separate the two. Based on the two dictionary definitions above, I feel my stance is logically justified, as Any activity is recreational and provides amusement to its fans/players.

So to be clear, I mean that raking leaves is a sport/game if Anyone does it for fun, competition, recreation, etc. Replace raking leaves with: racing cars, eating food, jumping, ballet, hopskotch, whistling, etc, and you see what I mean. There are people who don’t think cheerleading is a sport, but ask any cheerleader, and they’ll tell you.

The idea that physical activity is a requirement for something to be a sport or game is vague and, perhaps, superfluous. For example, Most of us would consider pool a sport. Many would consider Poker and/or Chess a sport. Most of us would consider hunting a sport. Yet all three of these examples require minimal physical activity. (The hunting I’m referring to here is in terms of the sit and squeeze a trigger variety). Yet the mental and dextrous part of these sports (and games) can’t be denied. So we have a term “physical activity” that is either being used very loosely here, or not at all. If we want to make physical activity a defining feature, we need to operationally define it. Does it mean you have to sweat? Do you have to be winded? Does it simply involve Any motion whatsoever?

One major point of contention is that Video games are not a sport. But why? Because you don’t sweat or move as much as other sports? There is competition, there is team work (often), there is hand-eye coordination, there is strategy. Also, with the advent of new motion sensing technology, such as Nintendo’s Wii controller and Sony’s Eye Candy, the physical activity of video games is rising rapidly. I read an article about someone who wants Video games included in the Olympics because it’s as physical as that one crazy sport/game: Curling.

Please tell me Your definition of sport, game, and physical activity. Also tell me whether Darts, Pool and Card games such as poker, are sports.

When it came time to park, we saw a space with three girls standing in it, to save it. I pulled up next to them and said, ” You guys are standing Right where I’m going to reverse.” She said, ” Someone is coming for this spot.” I replied, ” Well I’m here now and they aren’t.”

I pulled forward, reversed and parallel parked perfectly, but slowly enought to allow the three girls to escape to the safety of the sidewalk. Sucks I guess, but after the traffic and full parking lots I’d already been through, I had no choice. The next spot I saw was My spot.

Swam a bit, then went to have dinner. On the way to dinner, a black cat decided to saunter across the street. We stopped in time to let the feline make its way, slowly, to the other side of the street… the cat could have cared less for the danger it was in…

A nice korean dinner to top it off, and now! Study time, YAY… oh, btw. My huge POS phone… I did a factory reset on it. It might make a difference. We’ll see.

BUT when I get my bike back, I want to go downtown and take pictures, so I’ll try to take a one day break for that.

It’s almost like luck of the draw, so I will just expand my vocabulary as much as possible. If you speak to me in the next few weeks, and you notice my verbosity or use of large and strange words, you know why.

My graduation is tomorrow, Cool. Expect lots o’ pics. My bike is being fixed. That will be $90. I was told that if I want to go off road biking, I need to buy a better bike, ie. $500+ Maybe I just won’t off road sooo much.

Sidenote: The year 2006 is half over… Can you beLieve that? omgomgomg

As a sidenote, I had my honors graduation yesterday. It was basically an hour of sitting and listening to names… I do it again on friday… Yay.. but still, you get a medal and all that cool shtuff.. oh but on friday we wear the cap and gown, which is cool.

So today, MaX and I decided to bike through the Santa Monica mountains to the beach for a bit. We took the same trail that kicked my @$$ a few days ago… well.. this time I was fine, but my poooor bike 🙁 My gear mechanism shattered, so we had to walk for a long while. I was able to coast if we were downhill but… that wasn’t always the case.

So I took the bus on Sunset and WoW, the buses have gotten Way better since I used to take them… Still, public transporation in LA is shameful.

So I made it home in time for dinner with Shahin, MaX and his grandparents, Nat and Fred. Towards the end of the night, I explain a couple of idioms to Fred: butter face and fugly. At this point, Fred says, ” When we were young and a girl was ugly, we’d say, ‘ Wrap a flag around her head and fuck her for old glory.'” I was expecting something like ” Gosh, she’s keen.”
We laughed loud and long… I think we actually offended the lady behind us. Sorry lady behind us.

Well, MaX leaves for Boulder tomorrow early. I hope to go visit him within 2 weeks but…. we shall see.

Oh oh oh!!! Check THIS out! After you watch it do this: www.PUTYOURNAMEHERE.youaremighty.com

Make sure to put your name where it says PUTYOURNAME.

So a couple days ago I went bike riding with MaX and his friend Matt… well… MaX told Matt I am a great, aggressive biker; apparently he forgot that I only learned to bike <1 year ago…

So we go down this mountain, about 8 miles and I fall FIVE times.. Now the first 3 times were fine, they weren’t really falls. I jumped off the bike and ran and I was fine. But 2 of the falls… were painful. Hips and elbows were bruised and battered, walking pains and bike damage ensued… the 2nd of the painful ones occurred when I tried to take a jump and… failed 🙁 So next time I won’t take any jumps, I’ll just focus on not dying!

This will be an exciting week. Dinners and lunches with friends and graduations to attend.

Dealing with things like: Graduation, travel, friends, family, cars, life, etc…

X-Men 3 sucked ass, and Not in a good way. It’s like the only pre-requisite for being a writer for that movie was Never reading an X-Men comic. My friend MaX is right: We NEED to stop supporting shitty movies like this simply because they carry a beloved brand.
